The Tm was produced in the thousands from 1974 till 1986, so where have they all gone? There was only one example at each of the 2001 & 2002 Bedford Gatherings. However we have managed to find three that are still working. This is there story on video.
The three trucks are all double drive 6 wheel tippers. 2 are powered by the famous Cummins L10 and 1 has the now rare Detroit 2 Stroke. The Detroit has one of those distinctive engine sounds. You can here it working under load in and around deepest Somerset
Over 20 years of trucking lie behind the Bedford TM's featured in our video. Here Chris Herbert loads up for the days run ahead. Then you can listen to the growl of his 335BHP Stroker
We are travelling in a cab with Alan Herbert, another TM fan. Our video gives you a unique chance to ride in cab and see not only 1 but 2 Bedfords working together. Dont forget these trucks were British designed and built.
Chris Herbert is a committed Detroit fan and has now fitted a 335BHP Turbo Charged engine. Here he explains why all is not what it seems with the 2 TM's they operate. It requires a unique blend of ingenuity and improvisation to keep them running
Peter Hamilton is a fully qualified mechanic and has done some interesting things to the TM.
He used to maintain the TM for his dad Ken. However during the course of filming Ken retired and Pete has now taken over the business.
Chris and his son Allan, have done some major work too both trucks. Allan is a fully qualified mechanic. You can see his handy work up close during our indepth interview with Chris at their Somerset base.
We joined Ken Hamilton on some of his regular runs from a
Cheshire Sand Quarry, up into the Derbyshire Peak District....Its tough going but the Cummins engine has never let them down.
It doesnt take long to load 16 Tonnes of sand. However the TM's do have one fault, which makes a big difference to both trucks carrying capacity.
Find out why on the video.
Our time with Ken and Pete included an Oil change and a spring replacement plus some attention to the chassis.
Pete Hamilton is looking to change the TM so we are lucky to have been around to film its last days. You can hear his views on the Video, Fortunatly
Chris Herbert has no such plans.
The drivers door window mechanisim has suddenly given up the ghost. Pete soon solves the problem , All is revealed on the video.
